About Aryeh Kaufman

Aryeh focuses his practice on cross-border investigations, financial crime and complex commercial disputes.

Aryeh represents financial institutions, corporations and individuals in cross-border investigations involving  allegations of bribery, fraud, tax offenses, money laundering, terrorist financing, and economic sanctions and trade violations.  He has deep experience advising clients on financial crime risks and compliance, including in connection with cross-border transactions, and he has represented clients in a broad array of contexts, including before the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), state regulators, in mediation and in federal and state court.

Aryeh also has significant experience representing disadvantaged individuals on a pro bono basis and serves as co-director of the US Pro Bono Committee.

Recent work

  • Advising a Switzerland-headquartered global financial institution in extended discussions with the DOJ and other regulators in connection with concerns relating to US tax compliance that we ultimately resolved favorably on behalf of our client.
  • Advising two UK-headquartered global financial institutions on a diverse array of financial crime related risks, covering anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering, sanctions and other regulatory matters, as a member of their global financial crime legal teams (on secondment).
  • Representing Google in defending antitrust claims brought by DOJ, State AGs, and private plaintiffs based on Google's advertising technology;
  • Representing eight Swiss financial institutions participating in the DOJ’s unprecedented industry-wide settlement program.
  • Advising private equity and investment firms on compliance with sanctions, export controls, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering rules in connection with acquisitions and investments, including developing and implementing compliance programs and disclosing breaches to government regulators.
  • Representing a global financial institution in connection with alleged manipulation of currency markets, including regulatory inquiries from around the world including the DOJ, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, global banking regulators, the UK Financial Conduct Authority and the New York Department of Financial Services.
  • Advising Goldman Sachs on sanctions and financial crime compliance in connection with its acquisition of NN Investment Partners.
  • Representing a global investment bank in multiple disputes over the sale of complex structured products to institutional investors who claim they were misled regarding the nature of the products.
  • Advising major telecommunications companies and mobile network operators on the impact of US export controls restrictions and technology controls on global operations.

Qualifications

  • JD, Harvard Law School.
  • BA, magna cum laude, philosophy and psychology, Columbia University.
  • Admitted to practice in New York and before the United States district courts for the Southern and Eastern districts of New York.
